RE: [Philmont]: Coed Crews

Scott, our Council has sent coed crews several times as Explorer Post crews
and Venturing Crews.

This year our contingent had one coed crew our of three, similar to your
situation. Certainly everyone has to be registered and participate in all
the training and preparation. The crew dynamics may be a little different
that what you're used to in an all male crew, but that can be a positive at
times.

I've found that you need to determine the crew leader as soon as possible,
and the primary adult advisor, and let them work out crew behavior
standards. If you have too many chiefs, or adults that won't let the crew
leader do his/her job, you're not going to have a good time, coed or not.

Virtually everything you will need to know will be in the Philmont
Guidebook to Adventure that you will receive in March. Work out any
personality issues before you get to Philmont and you'll have a great time.

Subject: [Philmont]: Coed Crews

Can someone enlighten me on coed Venture Crews going to Philmont? I know
they are allowed, but what are the rules? Our Council is looking to take 3
crews to Philmont this year and the Contingent Leader is looking to put
together a coed crew. I am concerned as this is a Council Crew with no
experience with a coed crew. I found out last night that one of the 2
youth
females going is not registered with Scouts. Her mother was looking for a
Venture Crew to register her with. I think they are pushing for the coed
crew so one of the 3 women in the crew can take her daughter. What
requirements would you suggest for this crew. The current roster is for
this crew is 3 women, 1 man, 2 youth females & 6 youth males. Currently we
only have 3 training weekends planned which is what we have done for the
past 3 years, but I am concerned about the dynamics of the coed crew with
such little time together. In the past all of the members knew each other
well going into the event due to OA, Council and other activities. This is
not the case in members who have not been involved in the program.

Thanks,

Scott Payne
