I was fortunate to take a co-ed Venturing (please everyone, I know it is a
minor point, but the name is Venturing crew, not a Venture crew) crew to
Philmont in 2000. The requirement for any overnight activity is the same; a
male and female advisor, both of which must be 21 years of age or older. We
operated just like any other crew without problems. We were fortunate since
the crew really was a crew and not a provisional unit like the one you
describe in your original posting so we had lots of time together before we
started our Philmont training program. I guess the best advice I can offer
to a provo crew is spend time together; get to know one another. Go to
movies, or putt-putt golf. Do an indoor climbing wall or a COPE course
before you start your formal Philmont shakedowns.
For the last 8 years, Wally Feurtado and I have produced a Philmont Advisor's
Guide using input from some of the experienced folks on this list. The Guide
is now 77 pages long single space and has a section on co-ed crews. The
Guide is available as an e-mail attachment for a donation to Venturing Crew
