I've not taken a crew to Philmont, but I do have the
pleasure of being the Advisor to a co-ed crew.
Get everyone registered.
Let the youth surprise you by having them discuss,
under the guidance of the crew's youth leader, with a
bare minimal amount of input from the adults, the
conduct concerns and expectations from the youth
perspective.
Encourage them to set their standards for privacy
considerations, reviewing to be certain they stay
within Guide to Safe Scouting and Philmont parameters
of course (this likely will not be a problem though.)
If necessary, guide them to recognizing mutual respect
for each other, though they will probably be a step
ahead of you in this areas as well.
Help any who need it, male or female, work out a
physical training regimen to aid in a successful trek.
Then get ready for a great experience through your
shakedown trips and planning meetings.
As much as I still love my Cub Scouting hat, I've sure
had a great year watching this co-ed crew grow over
the last twelve months. I'm blessed because many of
them did know each other coming in, but even with the
new youth, it's been very smooth going.
In truth, the only difficulties have come when our
well meaning adults have not been trusting enough to
stay far enough out of their way. this has included
me on a couple of occasions, but we're all doing much
better on that aspect as well.
