Not true! (at least out of your own pocket....) Since every unit going
to Philmont has a couple years' advance notice, it is very possible to
defray the cost for ALL by the unit sponsoring high-adventure fund
raising activities. Our unit makes this a regular feature offered to
anyone who wants to participate & the earnings are set aside in an
ear-marked "high adventure" scout account for the individuals use
"later". Such things as do yard work, small chores, etc are done.
Members of our Chartering Organization (a church) have been great at
supporting the scouts in this manner. A committee member acts as the
liason between the person hiring the scouts & the troop. How many are
needed, how long, etc. All work offered by us is on a donation basis &
customers have been generous. Always, always, we send the boys in pairs
with at least pairs with 2 deep protection. The adults working are
given equal financial consideration in the unit's High Adventure account
for their time spent on these projects.

If work opportunities are limited, the older scouts & adults actually
signed up going somewhere receive first priority. After that, any scout
wanting to do the work can start participating & building his account.

The unit also ran a concession stand one summer at a local ball field.
Time intensive - yes! Profitable? VERY !!!
