The response that subsidizing the cost of the leaders is at the expense
of the youth is not complete in my view. The cost that the advisors
incur - use of automobile during shakedowns, travel and time to planning
meetings, phone calls, time away from work, in some cases purchase of
equipment used by the crew, etc. is significant. Is that cost shared by
the crew? Giving the advisors a break on cost is a way of thanking them
for this contribution. Our council reduces the cost to advisors by
about 25%. This increases the cost to the youth by about $50-$60 each.
Our troop does not charge trained leaders for trips or summer camp.
When we went to Philmont, due to the cost, advisors paid full ticket.
