This is my first time on this message board, so be gentle.
Our unit used to give a "discounted rate" to the advisors on any summer outing - and in the case of resident camps we still do. However, if this is just going to picked up by the boys in the group, the leader still pays an additional fee if his own son or sons go as well. So I say, either the troop pays for the main advisor in full, or all the advisors pay the same as the boys. After all, as Jon said, "We can claim these expenses as deductions".
Our troop has 2 crews headed for Philmont July 1, 2003. Hope to see some of you there.

The response that subsidizing the cost of the leaders is at the expense of the youth is not complete in my view. The cost that the advisors incur - use of automobile during shakedowns, travel and time to planning meetings, phone calls, time away from work, in some cases purchase of equipment used by the crew, etc. is significant. Is that cost shared by the crew? Giving the advisors a break on cost is a way of thanking them for this contribution. Our council reduces the cost to advisors by about 25%. This increases the cost to the youth by about $50-$60 each.
Our troop does not charge trained leaders for trips or summer camp. When we went to Philmont, due to the cost, advisors paid full ticket.
