What backpacking tents do your units use and what do you feel are theIn addition to the name brand equipment (lots of Kelty recommendations so far) scouters should also know about Alps Mountaineering. You can view their gear and regular prices there.
pro's and con's of your tents? Thanks in advance.
They also run a second site, www.scoutdirect.com that has special pricing just for scouts and scouters. Their scout pricing is 45% off their regular prices. They also have a special program that allows you to order one "demo" (per troop) of a piece of their equipment at a 60% discount in order to check it out. As I recall, you need to register with them before ordering at the scout price. After registering, I've only gotten occasional emails announcing sales and haven't been bombarded with junk mail.
They do frequently have sales and one is on right now. They have what look to be good "troop purchase" tents for extremely good prices. Check out their current sale for the details.
Disclaimer. I have not actually purchased/used/seen their tents. I do have several of their compression sacks and have ordered one of their Red Tail internal frame packs for inspection (it actually ended up being purchased by our scoutmaster's son). I plan to order one of their winter sleeping bags for my son for Christmas this year (Shhh! It's a secret!).
The pack and stuff sacks that I've seen are of good quality--sturdy construction but not ultra-lightweight. The pack had a choice of multiple sizes for hip belt and shoulder straps, which I found particularly useful for fitting boys.
They are really nice people to do business with. (For instance, when I ordered the pack, they sent it on their "Try It, But It" plan: if I didn't like the quality or nobody in the troop wanted it, I was welcome to return it, no questions asked. They even sent it with two sizes of belts to be sure we could fit it to whichever boy decided to buy it.)
They don't have online ordering, so once you've checked out the website, give them a call to place an order or ask any questions. They accept credit cards as well as troop checks for payment. Their phone number is 888-908-2044. Again, I found them very easy to work with and very friendly.
