The reason that compaction of trash is such a big deal is some places don't
get a truck to pick up all the trash more then once a week. Some closer to
basecamp do get trucks more often. So camps have to keep all their trash,
plus every crew that comes through their camp. This all has to be kept in a
bear box that is about 3 foot square. Believe me those get filled up very
quickly. While visiting some staff camps I would offer to take out their
trash. This would consist of carrying usually 2 large trash bags completely
full. And this was before lunch. And they do this every day. Think about
a camp like Black Mountain that has to pack all that onto a burro, and hike
it a couple miles. So yes trash compaction is very important.
