Guys, I agree with the assessment of the APEX, but would like to add my
opinion. Our "standard" troop tent is the Mountain Pass XT in four man size.
They also make it in a two man configuration. Why the Mountain Pass over
the Apex? It uses aluminum poles instead of fiberglass, which cuts way down
on weight. Why get a four man tent? Lots of room...Also, three or four
scouts split the tent up. By doing this, each scout carries a small amount
of weight. I was very skeptical of the aluminum poles. When my local Eureka
offered my a "free trial" of the tent, I jumped on it. After three trips,
the PLC voted to purchase 12 tents. The double doors/windows are a great
value, and there is even a zip open roof vent. Just close it when it gets
cold. Three years later, the only damage to the twelve tents is one bent
aluminum pole. It was done by an older scout who was relay upset at the
time. He still did not break it, just bent it. I am also proud to report
that our tents were used in Philmont. I met lots of jealous advisors on the
trail who had feet stuck against the end of Philmont tents, and very little
room inside. I'm 6'2", and enjoy the larger tents.
