I don't really recall anyone damaging our crew leaders paper work in
stamping it. I did notice a lot of rivalry between different camps.
Sometimes a staffer would try to make his stamp bigger or more noticeable
than a previous one or even stamp over another one. I think the crews from 2
treks I helped out on had their stamped paperwork framed for the Scout hut
wall after the trek.
I only recall one camp with an attitude. We had picked up food at the
commissary and were in the process of reorganizing some meals and wanted to
put some things in the swap box and take out some items. The staffer in
charge told our crew chief we would all have to take of our packs and stand
on our heads on his front porch and sing a song while upside down, other
wise we could keep all our food. We had already hiked a pretty steep stretch
for 5+ miles and were pretty beat. We just wanted to get back on the trail.
After our crew chief told us what he had said, I approached the staff member
and asked his name and quietly told him I would need it when I made my
report at base camp as this was unnecessarily endangering the health and
well-being of my crew and this was a youth protection and G2SS issue. He
told me he had only been kidding and to go ahead and get whatever we wanted
out of the swap box and disappeared into the commissary. I never reported
him. I hoped he got the idea that what he was asking was not in the best
interest of the Scouts or Philmont's program.
My experience has been that 99% of the staff members I have met at Philmont
are hard working and really care about ensuring that everyone has a great
time at Philmont.
