This is my first response to the list although I have benefited from it
greatly.
Our troop set the training schedule early and did a few things that
might help.
1. We scheduled more training hikes than needed so that a scout could
miss one or two and still be prepared.
2. We require a signed commitment from the scouts and parents
acknowledging the importance and consequences of training. (got the form
from this list)
3. We made only the last two hikes mandatory so that the crew is used
to working together in full strength before the trek.
4. For those that do all the training hiles there is an incentive. We
train in the Georgia section of the Appalachian trail. Those that do it
all will get backpacking merit badge and a Georgia Thru-hikers certificate.
We have had some grumbling from competing interests (church youth group,
academic clubs) but so far have held firm that this is a rare
opportunity that requires this level of commitment to make it the best
experience for all. So far it's working.
I favor some degree of flexibility as long as the trek goals of team
building and preparation are met. Hope some of this helps.
