Re: [Philmont]: Building a team

Our crew (we went for a short trek last August) had no required
practice hikes. We are a backpacking troop, and each individual crew
member attends 50% or more of the troop campouts.

The best solution that I've heard is, if you have 8 practice trips
scheduled, require attendance at 5 (or some other number) of them.

I'd say you have the following problems, in priority order:

1. You've got an inflexible crew leader who's too worked up about a
missed practice hike, for a trek that's at least seven months in
   the future.

2. You've got an adult who's missed a practice hike. In my experience
the scouts are always faster hikers, and in better shape, than the
   adults.

3. You've got two scouts who missed a practice hike.

Good luck, I'm sure this will shake itself out!

| Our Philmont crew leader is a bit put out that two of our scouts did not
| show up for our campout last weekend when the Philmont crew had a 10 mile
| hike in full packs planned. He want to set required practices with the
| stipulation that if you miss, you can not go on the trip. His mother, who
| is also going as an adult, is backing him big time. His mother missed the
| hike too because she had to be the open house for her partnership's new
| veterinary clinic. (Of course according to them, that does not count
| because she is an adult and had a good excuse.) The two scout who missed
| had opted to attend their high school home coming events that weekend.
|
| My take is that we have reserved twelve spots at Philmont and have train
| reservations for twelve. If we remove a scout someone has to pay the fees
| or we have to find new crew members who would have not been on the practice
| hikes either. Neither choice make sense to me. I will work with the
| scouts to see that they free up their calendar for future hikes. But what
| if some scouts do miss the future practice hikes? What have your crews done?
