Mr. Smith,

I may not say what you want to hear.

A number of things come to mind:
-seems a bit early to be planning and expecting full particpation in such an
extensive pre-Philmont trip
-when planning the hike the crew did not consider that at least two of the
members were in HS and that Homecoming occured that weekend?
-being part of a crew means a balance between flexibility and full team
participation

I think the crew leader's best course of action is to express his concerns
to the Crew politely and then to encourage them to find ways to work
together to plan for better timing on upcoming events.
