I set up 5-6 weekend backpacking trips of about 15 miles. I would really
check schedules and try to avoid things like homecoming. These are busy
scouts, and they often do have a lot of other activities. I require a
minimum of 4 of the trips and that includes adults. If a scout or adult
needs extra physical conditioning, I help them work out a schedule to climb
a hill or steps in a full pack. We do give a little award to everyone who
makes every trip. Also on the backpacking shakedowns I ask the adults to
not help with the cooking and cleaning to get the scouts used to doing it
and working as a team and helping each other no matter whose job it is. I
do this with the understanding that adults will pull their shift along with
the boys when we are actually at Philmont.
I have been in 1992 with 5 crews, 1996 with 3 crews, and 2000 with 4 crews.
Hope to get a reservation for 2004 with 3 to 4 crews.
