As another person noted, this is my first Philmont post but I've benefited
greatly from this discussion group. Our Troop first got into high adventure
two years ago -- Sea Base in '01, Northern Tier in '02, looking forward to
Philmont (returning as a leader) in '03. We've worked through similar
issues, e.g. a) should (any) training be mandatory, b) what expectations for
adult leaders and c) how can we function as a team vs.. a collection of
individuals.

Since we've begun our high adventure program I've developed a "High
Expectations for High Adventure" letter I e-mail to parents and read aloud
(campfire setting) to the Crew prior to the start of each high adventure.
It's clear and concise. It's worked well for us. In the spirit of sharing
here's an excerpt that's relevant to this discussion thread.
 ____________________________________________
1) On a high adventure we are not individuals. Our Crew is a xx-person team.
Everyone (all Scouts, all adults), regardless of age, rank or title is
expected to cheerfully do more than their fair share. In short, the team
comes first.

2) On this high adventure we are into 2 Crews. All Crewmembers (all Scouts,
all adults) are expected to cheerfully take direction from your Crew Leader.
Crew Leaders are expected not to bark out orders but to 'lead by example'.

3) On a high adventure we will conduct ourselves according to the Scout Oath
and Law at all times. This includes no ridicule, no name-calling, no
swearing, and no fighting. Crew Leaders are expected to take responsibility
for the conduct of their Crewmembers.
