[Philmont]: More about mom

I decided to make this a separate email.

The mom (an Assistant Scout Master) who missed the practice hike is
definitely a type A personality. She is both a veterinarian and a
podiatrist with two separate active practices. Both youth members and the
other adult members know that she brings exceptional medical skills to the
crew, and want her along.

The entire troop works well with her, and she really understands better
than the rest of the troop leaders what it takes to keep the troop boy
run. The fact that she missed the practice hike is not an issue with the
rest of the crew, they know how she works and her hands off leadership
style. When needed she is a true advisor, asking questions to get the
scouts to work out the solutions to the problems. No one has ever
questioned or complained about her membership in the crew.

Mom was the first one to sign up for the trek, and purchased a backpack
before the call in last year. She has done practice hikes on her own, so
her son is not concerned about her conditioning.

What I see as the issue is the fact that she brought the concern about the
missing scouts to my attention instead of her son. She also asked that
future missed events carry real consequences that I thought
unreasonable. This may just take some education about the fee structure
and what financial commitments the troop has made. Everyone has a right
to their own opinions, so I can work on that level with her. She had never
held back and opinion or opposing view, but had never forced her own
opinion on the rest of the troop. What the committee and the crew advisors
agree upon as a group, she will embrace.

I did want input into what other crews did with scouts missing practice
hikes, and I can use that in presenting the committee with my solution to
the problem. Thanks for helping.
