I am a "powers that were".

Nothing is left at a Staff camp in the off season. Each summer begins with
Scatter where at the equipment (foamies, pots, pans, food, people, program
equipment and personal gear) get delivered to the Backcountry. In the
August there is a similar activity called Gather.

The only items left at a camp in the winter are heavy durable items that
can't be eaten by anything.

Each camp has it own Scatter/Gather box where the equipment is kept until
the following year.

I spent 5 years working and living in the back country and I think the idea
of a floating library is a good one. While the good generic paperback will
be greeted happily, by and large I found that people liked to read along two
main lines: history specific to each interpretive camp and
ecology/conservation.

The people at the interpretive camps loved historical books on mountainmen
and women, homesteading, fur trapping, western lore and indian lore. Beyond
that it was a pretty heavy helping of Edward Abby.

Adding books in the interpretive history genre would greatly assist Program
Counselors conveying that history to the Campers.

You're best bet for a contact on this is Doug Palmer (505) 376-2281

Enjoy!
Douglas
