In 1996, I spoke with the lady at the Southern Region
in Atlanta who processes National Tour Permit
Applications and asked if it made a difference if a
group was "all adult". She said it did since there were
no youth members involved in the trip, i.e., the BSA
rules are designed to ensure the safety of youth
members. During our most recent trip to Philmont, five
people shared the driving responsibilities so we always
had a "fresh" driver.
Previously, I had been told by the same person at SR HQ
that a group (with youth members) traveling by
motorcoach could travel more than 500-600 miles per day
since the ICC has rules that prohibit a motorcoach
driver from driving more than a certain number of hours.
Over the years, we've made several trips by motorcoach.
The longest was about 1,300 miles and three drivers were
involved. We departed home one day and arrived at our
destination the next day. This is an excellent way to
travel if there is a large BSA group involved as it
helps adults be more rested plus it reduces the the
amount of vacation time required for long trips.
