[Philmont]: Fundraising

Our troop is sending a crew to Philmont in June of 2003. There has been a
lot of interest among the crew and their parents to do some extra
fundraising, especially as three families have more than one family member
on the trek and are trying to help everyone pay their own way.

One of the popular ways for groups to earn money in our area is to bag
groceries for tips at some of the local grocery stores, then divide the
money equally among the participants. Our crew wants to do this, but where
it gets complicated is other scouts want to come and earn money for their
scout accounts too. The crew wants to cover all the lanes themselves (6
lanes). They would prefer to work harder and only have to divide the
donations between them, rather than 35 ways. More people doesn't
necessarily mean more money, as I've seen groups that are too large bagging
groceries, and people end up sitting around. This doesn't look good for the
organization either.

Do any of your troops allow crews to do additional fundraising for special
trips, or is it 'everyone does everything'? Any suggestions would be
appreciated. Thanks!
