Mark,
When our troop went to Philmont in '99, we traveled by Amtrak in
uniform. We boarded the trail in South Bend and changed trains in
Chicago. When we arrived in Chicago we were getting off of the train when
a porter approached us. "Are you going to Ratan?", he asked. He led us to
room where he suggested a place of our pack lines. Now how did he know
where we were headed? Uniforms gave us away. He showed respect and went
our of his way to make us feel welcome.
Our entire crew had its crew shirts on under our class A's. We allowed our
scouts to pack away the field shirt after dinner and spend the evening in
crew shirts while they slept in their seats. The field shirts were back on
before breakfast.
On that trip, on the way back to Chicago, the train announced a breakfast
special for scouts in uniform.
So you can travel in whatever you want and have everyone annoyed at all of
those teenagers running all over the place. Or you can receive respect in
uniform and let everyone know how cool it is to get to Philmont because you
be belong to this program. I would rather advertise the cool trip we got to
go on and let other boys know they can have a ticket to adventure.
