RE: [Philmont]: uniform traveling

Our Houston Council contingents travel by bus for about 15 hours to
Philmont. We leave at 4pm and arrive at about 8am the next morning. Our
general rule is that crews be in full uniform when off the bus but t-shirts
are allowed while actually moving down the highway. We only make about 4 or
5 stops so for most on the bus the shirts are put on as they exit the bus
and removed when they return. They wear them when they arrive at base camp
but typically they are stowed later in the day or after Crew pictures are
taken. They usually aren't seen again until after showers on the return day
and at the closing campfire and the trip back home.

The exception is for Venture Crews or Explorer Posts who wear the uniform of
their choice. On my last trek, we had an Explorer Post that was chartered by
a small town EMS unit and they had nicely silk-screened T-shirts.

As far as being treated differently while in uniform, my only experience is
that once while waiting for some other Scouts to show up at a shopping
center to travel to camp, my son and I checked out an Asian grocery store
just for fun. The owner seemed very concerned as we were checking out the
unusual items on the shelves. He insisted on showing me that the cooler had
been repaired as per a health department citation that was posted. I think
he thought we were somehow affiliated with them!
