Pete ---

I'd say close to half the treks finish up by hiking into Base Camp via the
Tooth. Whether you have a rookie crew or a bunch of Philmont veterans, it's
a really great way to complete your trek, rather than an anti-climatic ride
back to Base Camp in a school bus. The hike in over Tooth Ridge is not
difficult, but it does make for a rather long last day. I think others on
here would agree with me in saying that it should be one of the options to
highly consider in your planning process. There are a few treks (such as
#1) that go up and over Shaffers Pass and offer the option of sidehiking the
Tooth. Note that sidehiking the Tooth will take, on average, a minimum of 4
hours roundtrip.

So I'd say while age and experience should definitely play a role in the
length and level of difficulty of the trek you choose, they shouldn't be a
factor in deciding whether or not to hike in over Tooth Ridge. Regardless
of whichever trek you choose, (as others have said here before) there are no
bad treks at Philmont :)

  To the veterans,

I've heard several people say it's really cool to hike into base camp on
the last day after coming over the Tooth of Time. Given the opportunity to
do that with an all-newbie crew, should that be a planning goal? There are
a few other treks that offer a side-hike to the Tooth of Time and maybe
those should be considered, too.
