Hiking in over the Tooth was awesome for our first-time crew. It was the
very first thing they included when planning their trek almost a year in
advance.
It is indeed a long hike from our final campsite (Ponderosa Park) into
Basecamp. For most crews it is also a very dry hike. We had beautiful,
pleasantly warm weather up to the Tooth peak and all the way into Tooth
Ridge Camp, where we had a leisurely lunch and our Chaplain held a final
trail reflection. We then headed down the never-ending series of
switchbacks, anticipating getting very low on water (although our Crew Chief
had instituted strict water conservation when we left our final morning's
campsite.)
What we ended up getting was a fast forming storm with torrential rain of
Bilbical proportions, with lightning strikes on the mesas flanking the Tooth
Ridge. Very dramatic ending to the trek. Fortunately nothing hit the Ridge
itself and we hustled off, eventually through ankle-deep water, arriving
like eleven drowned rats to the YOU MADE IT gate. The pride on everyone's
faces in the pictures of us passing through the gate reflected the fact that
every step was worth the effort!
