I have completed a trek BOTH ways, hiking in over the Tooth and taking the
BUS.
When we hiked in over the Tooth, we got up at 4 AM to get an early start.
Went to bed at 7 pm or so. It was STILL a long haul with all the
switchbacks down to the BASE. Even with starting early and planning, some
almost ran out of water. It was a really sunny morning. UPSIDE - we got to
base when WE wanted to, turned in all gear before lunch, showered, and took
the bus into Cimarron for pizza, and STILL made it back to tour Villa
Philmonte at 4 pm. (make your reservations for this BEFORE you leave on
your trek)
Coming back on the BUS was good also, because our crew was able to hit MORE
staffed camps for program. They didn't care that they rode back in, they
had program areas that they really wanted to do. You schedule what time you
want the bus to pick you up too.
BOTTOM LINE -- have your crew prioritize what THEY want to do. THat will
really help them pick. WHAT ever trek they pick (like everyone says, there
really isn't a bad trek at Philmont) Get BACK to BASE as early in the day
as possible.....allows for clean up time, showers, time in Cimarron and Vila
Philomonte.
