Re: [Philmont]: Tents

Our crew of 12 used the blue Phil tents this summer and found them more than
adequate. We had a torrential rainstorm on our second night out and stayed
dry. They're roomy enough and pack relatively small. My guess is they
weigh around 6-7# each. This weight, of course, can be divided among the
tent partners by splitting out the tent, rainfly and poles. But, on the
other hand, the other partner may be carrying his share (and then some) of
the food.

Can you go lighter? Sure. Maybe a little. Can you spend your time at
Philmont in a better quality tent? Probably not. They're very easy to set
up, too.

If there's a downside, you need 14 stakes per tent, and you pretty much need
them all as the tent is not free-standing. You have to account for the
stakes weighing something, but in reality, the carrying the tents and stakes
are no big deal.

I'd recommend using the Philmont tents any time you go.
