Re: [Philmont]: tents

David-there are two schools of thought on this. Some folks LOVE the
Philtents (for various reasons), others think they can do better (for
various reasons). You will hear both sides in this forum.

Personally, we brought our own tents in 2002 and 2004 (the same tents,
actually <g>). Our reasoning:

      1. The youth were already familiar with their setup and capabilities
as we trained with them.

      2. We knew they were in good shape and were confident they wouldn't
leak because we had used them the previous month.

      3. They were 25% lighter (but smaller) that Philtents (ours 5.5 lbs,
theirs 7.5 lbs, I think)

      4. We didn't have to dink around with checking the Philtents in and
out before and after (especially after) our trek.

You will get everyone's preference, but we used 2-person Coleman Peak 1
Aries tents that we got at the factory outlet, on sale, using our 20% BSA
discount. The model we use is no longer made, it has been replaced by the
Coleman Exponent Oryx. Our tents cost us less than $80 apiece. They are
going on 5 years old, and we've had ZERO problems with them. We intend to
use in the same tents again in 2007 (if we get our trek).

A supplemental comment, we were much happier with bringing our own dining
fly in 2004 than using the Philfly like we did in 2002. We decided on a
Noah's Tarp, for the same reasons as above (familiarity, good condition,
lighter and less hassle).

Also, it bears mentioning that since we are less than 4 hours from Philmont
by car, we could more easily get more gear down to Philmont than those who
have to plane, bus or train down to Philmont... YIS. Mike Conkey ('76,

I am looking for a little advice on tints. do you like the tents that
they issue at philmont? or would you recommend taking our own tents.
thanks david richardson
