For those who choose to take their own tents to Philmont, obviously, that
option is always there.
One thing I'd like to reiterate though, especially to those who are going to
Philmont for the first time and will be making a decision on which tents to
use, the Phil tents are not difficult to set up. Actually, they're quite
easy to set up after you've done it once. Easier to set up for the first
time than some of the uniquely-shaped domed tents that are on the market
these days that have poles going every which way.
A first-timer reading some of the posts on this topic may get the wrong
impression, but they're clearly not difficult to set up. Fourteen stakes
per tent is a bit on the high side compared to common backpacking-type
tents, but even that isn't the end of the world.
If you're determined to bring your own tents, do it. If you're not, the
Phil tents will treat you just fine.
