RE: [Philmont]: Tents

Lol, my only comment about hightops vs lowtops is the crew spends a lot of
time waiting on the lowtop to find his way over a stream that was an inch
deeper than his boot. It has very very little to do with ankles.

Good basic question, only beaten by the hi-top verses low-top boots subject
due to surface around March.
Some other thoughts: With Phil Tents you don't need to transport them to
and from. By air, this can be a bit of a pain. However, my biggest concern
with using Phil tents is time. It takes time to check them out, hang them,
inspect them, and re pack them, and you need to do the same thing when you
return them. Time at base camp is a precious commodity, the less wasted, the
better. On the upside, aside from a little extra weight, I've never heard a
real complaint about Phil tents. The rangers use them.
Your own tents should be of high quality, and I echo the sentiment that
they should have a vestibule, 2 if possible. This is like the difference
between staying in a no name motel, and one with free room service, a bar,
and a pool. That little extra makes daily living so much easier, especially
by around day 6.
For those looking into the purchase of a bunch of tents: Alps has some nice
ones that have gotten very good reviews by those of this list.
Also, look into group discounts. Our 2 crews got a heck of a price on REI
half domes because they purchased 10 of them. I think it was under or around
$100.00/TENT. By the way, this is an outstanding tent for Philmont. 2 hikers
can put it up in about 2 minutes by around the third day on the trail, fold
up takes about 3 minutes, and it has two doors, and two vestibules, so when
you heed natures call in the middle of the night, you needn't disturb your
tent mate. Adults take note. Oh Yeah, and it has a skylight (clear) window
for peaking at those glorious Philmont night skies.
 Just my 2 cents.
Happy Hiking,
 Tom
