EMS provides the same service.
I went in to get my youngest sized and to start the boot search. Both his
older brother and I got Vasque Zepher GTXs for our 2004 Trek - I loved them.
So this time around Vasque Zepher GTXs, even at $159, is at the top of my
list. We went by our local EMS store and it turns out they are running a
clearence here in PA this w/e. Log story short, got a $129.99 pair of EMS
Carter Ridge GTX for $89.98 ... A great buy on a Goretex boot. I'll let you
know how they work out in a couple of months.

REI will recommend you do that. My son and I both went through that
process, both to pick boots as well as buy a backpack. I think we spend
about an hour each for both events.
BTW, low-rise boots are not particularly kind to the hiker the first time
through a shallow stream. The high-top ankles are much more suited to
stream crossings. It cost our crew a lot of time last year because the 2
low-risers in the crew spent so much time picking out a crossing so as not
to get their feet wet. Until then, I thought the primary purpose of
high-top boots was to protect your ankles. Now I know better.

When I tried on my boots, the salesperson had me wear a loaded pack, and walk on an incline bench in the store. This gives you a good idea of wht the boots will do under a load. I would also recomend a boot that has some sort of shank built into the sole. Without this you can get terrible stone bruises while hiking. I also prefer boots with GoreTex built in to keep your feet dry. Going upstream into BLack mountain involves many creek crossings. GoreTex is worth it's weight in gold on this section. Chas. The most important consideration is fit and break-in. Get the best you can afford, fitted properly (including putting weight on you back) and put lots of miles on them before you go. A pair of sturdy $100 boots properly fitted and seasoned will treat you better than a $300 pair chosen for the wrong reasons and left in the box until your trek.
