RE: [Philmont]: Tents

This summer was my third trek and the first where all of our crew did
not use our own tents. Our crew this year used two Phil tents. I had
some of the same concerns expressed by others about using Phil tents.
After using them my comments:

Regarding setup - not an issue. The crew members using the Phil tents
were the least experienced campers that were in our crew and they had no
problem figuring out how to set up the tent.

Regarding check out / check in time - was not an issue for us. Of
course, we only had two but it did not affect the length of time to
check out and check in equipment. Luckily, the tents were dry when we
got to base camp or this could have been a different story but I still
do not think it will slow you down much if you work efficiently.

Bottom line for me - if you have a good backpacking tent that you like,
take it. If you don't, there is no reason to buy one just for Philmont,
use the Phil tents.
