Tom,

I cut a tree down for a neighbor yesterday. It had been blown over by
Hurricane Rita. He asked me how much FEMA paid for my two chainsaws. I tried not
to be offended, and told him I bought the big saw in 1986, and the little
saw four or five years ago.

He asked "Why would you you buy a chainsaw if there was no hurricane
damage?" I tried to explain being prepared as a state of mind, but he didn't get
it. Instead I told myself that people like him need strong people to help them
in times of crisis. I recalled my days as a scout, and remembered "do a
good turn daily", and "brotherhood of friendly service".

Keep up the good work Tom.

Several folks sent me emails to ask for a re-post of the note I responded to
yesterday. Below was the one that I responded and the preceding ones are
further down. Just got in from a long 'evening' of running fire calls to homes
asking to have their basements pumped. Apparently it's easier to call the fire
department, than to plan ahead. Some folks even wanted to know if we would
be coming back tomorrow to get their heating systems back up. I'm going to bed
in case there is a real emergency. Tonight is my duty night on the ambulance.
 Happy Hiking,
 Tom
