Re: [Philmont]: Stove fuel?

I can't speak for that particular fuel type, but I can say it depends on when they go and what the demand for that particular fuel has been recently (assuming they have that type to begin with). Since reprovisioning some of the backcountry store could be difficult, he should probably plan to have enough fuel before he leaves the base camp.

That said, more common fuel types might be more available. I typically make sure we bring enough white gas to provision the entire trek from the outset. The white gas in the backcountry might have contaminents and I just feel better having control over the situation.

If part of your travel involves flying, you will have to make accommodations for the fuel, you can't carry it onboard a plane and they won't check it either.

We were wondering what fuel types are available at the TOTT store and at the
back country stores and/or staff camps. One of our members just bought a
pocket rocket that only uses the MSR fuel cylinders. I told him that though
the idea was great in regards to stove weight, he would need to carry probably
several cylinders with him over the ten day period. He's thinking you can
purchase the fuel at the trading posts in the backcountry, but I don't remember
seeing that as an option in 2004. Any input?
