There are universities which are not finished until into June.

Starting earlier also could have issues.
Before participants arrive there is much to do. Staff training is a very
important. I think in 06 the first crews arrived June 8th. Ranger trainers
arrived 5/21 and most of the rangers arrived 5/29. For some that's over 2
weeks of training. In 05 the snow cover was an issue for the first few
treks. Some trails were closed and if I remember correct some could not
climb Baldy.

I am all for extending the season. Our schools are out well before Memorial
Day, but start in mid-August. Opening the season a week or two earlier
would give more opportunities. Colleges are usually done by early/mid-May,
so staff would be available. However, you have the staff's travel time to
Philmont and staff training time to deal with before the ranch would be
ready for arriving crews.

It might be easier to accommodate more crews in the current time frame by
better utilization of lesser used camps and trails. You can look at the
itineraries and see that some camps are rarely used. I've heard that the
most frequently used top third of the itineraries are used by two thirds of
the crews, so the remaining two thirds of the itineraries get relatively
little use. Perhaps adding crews on these itineraries is a solution.

However, each itinerary is not independent. They all share camps, trails,
programs, and backcountry resources, so finding a solution that doesn't
over-tax some resource is not a simple problem. And, of course, you have
all the base camp support functions to deal with, too.
