I'd suggest getting enough to use on training trips.
1. Gives you an idea of the bulk of the meals you'll be carrying.
2. There are many cooking ideas that seem good until you actually do them
on the trail (for us it was one pot meals....works well for some
meals....others it doesn't work so well).
3. Will help you know what you want to eat / carry and what you might want
to strip from your food bags and leave in the food exchange bins.
4. Picky eaters will have a better idea of what to expect on the trail.

getting the Phil food for a training hike is a really good idea.
The scouts will not understand how much room is needed for packing food
until they see the bags that come from Philmont. I would suggest getting
atleast one breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
most menu items are pretty good, jalepeno squeeze cheese is one of my
personal favorites, really !!
