YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!!!!
Does your former Troop still use canvas backpacks with wooden frames?
Do they consider it an "individual" Scouting activity? (an obvious oxymoron)
Why wouldn't a Troop want their qualified Scouts to attend a National High-Adventure Base (be it Philmont, Seabase, or Northern Tier) representing their unit, Council and home town? What better way to experience it than with fellow Scouts that have grown up together?
This sounds more like a problem with the adult leadership, than with the boys in the Troop. My own unit has been to Philmont numerous times, most recently 2005, 2002, 1999 and 1996. Our Venture Crew had a slot in 2006. Some of these have been through our Council contingent, and others have been independent slots. We try to have something every year as part of our overall Troop program.
Personally, I missed the opportunity to go as a youth with the Troop I grew up in, but had the chance to go this year with my son's Venture Crew, and absolutely loved every minute of it. The ultimate experience of my Scouting career? You bet! Would I want my Troop to go again? In a heartbeat!

Subject: [philmont] Does anyone else consider Philmont to be a Scouting activity ?
I recently had a discussion with my former Troop and was told by the leadership that a Philmont treck is NOT considered a Troop Scouting activity.
I did consider Philmont the ultimate Scouting adventure when I went 2 years ago. What does everyone else think?
Thanks,
Gary Mauler
