Can't help with the week on the AT because I haven't done that YET.
In communicating with a parent, one thought might be to have trek
journals available - from Seldon's site or others - that tell about
Philmont from a participant's stand point. Many of these reveal the
answer to your initial question quite well, especially those not written
by advisors. However, the Advisor journals can also provide good
insight, just from an adult point of view.
If you can find someone - again especially a youth - in your area that
has been to Philmont recently and would agree to come to a Q & A session
at the meeting where you discuss your plans, and have this individual
available for those who may be undecided, that can also be a good tool.
This same individual can also be a good source of information for the
crew (who sometimes don't listen to adult advisors until its too late)
during training. We had a couple of guys that worked with our crews,
and I think it helped reinforce what the Advisors were saying, and it
provided a youth perspective.
Happy Trails,
Roy Fisher
