Natually, an 18-20 year old is not eligible to be a Jr. Asst. SM, which
registration is simply a youth, JASM is an office, not a registration
status. They would be registered either as an ASM or youth member of a
crew. You have no option in your troop or your crew as to how these men are
classified. They are, for the Troop, adults, period. They are, for the
Crew, youth, period. This has no effect on how you classify them at
Philmont.
As to what you classify them at the Ranch, that very much depends on the
needs of your crew to reach your numbers. You must have more youth than
adults and no more than four adults but at least 2 (with one 21+). Your
decision how to classify them is largely driven by that consideration alone.
Have some real fun with numbers. Classify a 19 year old as a youth and an
18 year old as an adult on your crew. Remember, advisors are on vacation
:-).
We don't have to rehash the tenting issues, though :-)

We have several boys who will be attending our trek next summer who have
just reached the age of 18. I know that boys can be classified as either an
adult or scout from 18 to 21. My question is how have other troops
registered these boys to attend? Do you list them as junior assistant
scoutmasters or register in a venture crew?
