I appreciate everyone's input on this.
In 2003 I was an advisor for a Council Contigent going to Philmont. I was
familiar with the use of the Code of Conduct for the 2001 National Jamboree,
since my son had gone. We had to turn in a copy signed by the parent and
scout for that.
Since it was Council contigent going to Philmont I suggested we do the same.
Boys were coming from different troops, paying alot of money, and we ended
up having to use it. The boy in question was a mess right after getting on
the train -- no shoes, took off his crew shirt, stole a night in a sleeper,
it got even worst when we got to Philmont. He was actually a probablem for
most of the training.
Another crew from our council was going home and took him back with them.
When his parents were called to let them know what had happened, his mother
didn't seem too surprised.
during the training we gave him plenty of chances, I talked to him numerous
times about our expectations, and we all thought he'd probably rise to the
occasion, but he never did.....the moral of this story, if you have a scout
you doubt will make a positive contribution to the crew, cut him loose
early.
this scout was actually from my home troop, he never made Eagle, his mom was
my best friend......she hasn't talked to me in over 3 yrs.
All this may not have happened if we had been a crew from my home troop, I
probably wouldn't have written something like this either. My troop went in
1999, no problem. BUT, for the council contingent I think it is a really
good idea, just like for the National Jamboree. They use it every year now
based on the past experience.
One more thing, I do plan to use this for my troop going next summer. After
what happened before, I really don't want to take any chances.
