[philmont] Trying to decide between two tents

I was going to make the same suggestion, but since Thom was looking at two
specific items I decided to hold off as I have no personal experience with
either.

For a personal tent, I see the value of the upmarket tents, for troop use
I'm solidly behind ALPS mountaineerng for value and durability.

For 2006 we were ready to upgrade the troops backpacking tents, we were
really interested in their REI Half Dome about $169 but took serious look at
at Taurus II FG from ALPs (Scouting Pro Purchase at $40). In the end we
just couldn't see the value for the additional cost and ordered 6 more
Taurus II ALs (aluminum poles) at about $88 per copy (Fiberglas goes for
about $57). Their performance on the trail, on all levels, was awesome. We
also purchased the optional nyloin footprint - a great add-on.

Have you considered a tent from ALPS Mountaineering? Our troop has found
their tents and sleeping bags to be well-made and dependable. As a scout
you also get a 40% discount off their list price, so their Mystique 1 would
be $60 plus shipping
  http://www.alpsmountaineering.com/Mystique%201.htm

The discount is available only by ordering direct from ALPS at
1-800-344-2577. Full details about their Scout discount can be found at

    Hi all,

I am trying to decide between the Marmot EOS 1P & the Sierra Designs
Baku. Both are solo tents. Has anyone used one of these, and how did you
like them? Here are links to the tents-
