That whole program was developed by the Wilderness Medical Society. Dr.
William Forgey on the BSA safety committee was the lead I believe.

Too bad that your WFA class was not better. I took WFA from the Wilderness
Safety Council (www.wfa.net <http://www.wfa.net/> ) and found the course
outstanding. The instructor was knowledgeable. The class was fairly
intense. We went from 8-6 the first day and 8-5 the second with 30 minute
lunch breaks and a few 5 minute breaks. The material we covered was
outstanding. We had to show up with our backpacks ready to go on the trail
so we could learn to use what we would normally have available.
Was your class from the ARC? I would speculate that a WFA class from one of
the outdoor focused groups would, on average, likely be better than one from
the ARC. I would think you would be more likely to get an instructor that
is an experienced Wilderness EMT or similar background.

I took the WFA class recently. The idea behind it is 'Delayed Response',
where it will be more than an hour or so (maybe even days) before you can
get that person to a medical facility. But in my class, it seemed more of a
souped up First Aid class. I think any qualified First Aid instructor could
teach the class after they read the book.
One thing that was not covered was what to do with a severed or almost
severed digit. I looked in the book and it is not there either. That came
up at a "Worst Aid" training class at our Roundtable.
