[philmont] water purification

Kevin,
More people get sick drinking city water than trail water and lots of experienced trail people would suggest that purification is good for equipment sales but not always needed. For the best study I've ever seen read the Dec. 03 Backpacket article (they sent me an electronic version). Dealing with other people's children in a high use area it doesn't hurt to be careful but I would agree that going to 4 hours is a bit of overkill if you read and follow the directions.

Obviously, with no one was sick after a trek last summer we had no issues. It sort of makes me wonder why there was a change in procedure from 1 hour to 4 though.

Just back from Autumn Adventure where we learned that the Ranch is now recommending FOUR HOUR contact time with micropur tablets.

I took Jim Moss' advice and brought a Sawyer filter. A crew of twelve would probably need more than one. Using gravity, I was getting a gallon in about a half hour with no fuss. Perhaps there is a way to make it flow even faster. Jim would know. I was quite thrilled with it. I rigged mine between one gallon MSR Dromedary bags using two MSR Dromedary hydration conversion kits to provide the hose and connections between the bad water bag, the in line filter, and the good water bag. No pumping, just hang the one water bag up and let gravity do the work.

It comes with two small hose clamps in case your hoses aren't a perfect fit. Mine were.

I think you will all agree that waiting four hours for safe water can cramp your style a bit.
