In an effort to keep trip costs down, our troop has been eating a lot of
ramen, M&C and rice on our backpacking trips. We use optimus/brunton stoves
and an 8 or 10 quart pot. Extremely stable stove if placed on a relatively
flat surface. In 15 years, we have never had one tip over with a little
training and kitchen etiqute. One of the leaders usually brings a 1.5 or 2
liter pot for coffee water which we also use for clean up water. We do all
the cooking for 10-12 in the large pot. We usually go through between 2 and
3 litters for a 7 to 8 day trip cooking dinners and coffee every morning.
Also bring a long handled plastic spoon, a scrubby and camp suds. Each
scout brings a plastic or metal bowl and spoon to eat with. Cups are
optional since everyone uses a water bottle to make koolaide in.

Subject: [philmont] Backpacking Stoves and Cooking Gear
Our troop went to NTier this last year and enjoyed the experience of cooking
as a patrol while in the back country. We backpack a lot in our troop but
we usually pair up in twos and do our meals that way with small alcohol
stoves and small pots. Usually the food is ramen noodles, oatmeal & such.
We are considering changing our gear such that we can cook as a
patrol. Obviously the alcohol stoves and even something like a pocket
rocket won't do for a crew type meal so I am wondering what you guys have
and would suggest for stoves and cooking gear. We used the peak 1 stoves at
NTier and had like a 3 quart pot for the crew of 9. What other options are
out there?
