[Philmont] autumn adventure

I really have nothing substantive to add to Doug Latimer's post of last week concerning our AA trip or to the posts of Calvin Gray and John LeBlanc concerning their trip and the opportunity to meet other contributors to the list who happened to be at the Ranch simultaneously for AA treks.

I would, however, like to add a word about the possibilities that are present when Autumn Adventure treks meet the Philmont list.

I may have posted previously what I feel strongly , that the most difficult part of an AA trek is recruiting. It is so hard to get 6 or 7 Scouters from your Council to commit. Others may not have had this problem and good for them and their council. You already know that there were only 3 crews on the Ranch for AA during the week of September 22-29. 214 square miles and only 3 crews. Our guide said he only had one other crew to guide in October, before he is off thru Christmas.

This is an underutilized program, no waiting lists, no problem.

All of the three crews had most of their members from Texas. Within driving distance. Where are the rest of you??? My airfare from Philadelphia to Albuquerque was $197, plus applicable taxes. Then you rent a car for a week. Big deal.

3 of my 4 AA trips had participants from different councils, who had never met before, and who made their aquaintance through this list. DO NOT BE AFRAID!!!! You can gauge the experience of other Scouters without having met them. Ask the right questions, you will get the right answers. A Scout is trustworthy. AA will accommodate those who want to stay put and do day hikes at most, as well as those who want a moving camp and backpacking each day.

Participants must be registered BSA, but that can include committee members and merit badge counsellors. Use this opportunity as a tool to recruit a qualified MB counsellor, if he/she can backpack. You will be glad you did.

The run of the ranch, a guide, Philfood, a midweek food drop (and garbage pickup), all for $40 per day. Go for it!!! Use the list to build the number of participants to a full crew. Then let us know how it goes.

Well, that's all I have.
