I also have to agree with John. In the treks where I was the main adviser,
we always rotated jobs for the entire trek. Early in the training the boys
would elect their crew leader. I would work with him to set up 3 work groups
out of our crew. The crew leader set the assignments which rotated daily. We
all carried a laminated card that said which group had which job in camp
that day. I suggested to the crew leader that when making up the groups that
you don't always put the "best buddies" together. Try to put the opposites
together. The boys really get to know each other and learn to work with
others. I can honestly say that this has never presented any problems.

Without getting into a big discussion about what age youth is allowed to
tent with another, every nite every boy tents with a different crew member.
The crew leader sets this up before the trek and the boys have never had a
problem with it. Let's not get into the yearly discussion about tenting
ages. One of the three treks that I was able to go with both of my sons,
they were by National "rules" not allowed to tent together even though they
shared the same bedroom for 16 years. Tenting with everyone in the crew
really bonded the crew and some of them even left Philmont with a new "best"
friend.

The point is like John L said is that they won't learn anything if they
don't get a chance to try.

We have even used the same arrangements for the chores and tenting on my two
AA's. It worked great there, too.

Yes, the two AA's were all male and so were all of my treks.
