[Philmont] Thrifty Brave and Clean Rebuttals

Here is my own rebuttal to Adam Goodheart's Article, posted on Selden:

In fact, after further reflection, we did allow my Troop's 30+
subscriptions to lapse. We had previously purchased subscriptions to
Outside for all our Senior Scouts (H.S. aged) in an effort to get
something more adult than Boy's Life (the BSA's "Exploring" magazine was
quarterly, quite thin, and frankly speaking not very good).

The Goodheart article was basically the final straw for us. Up til the
mid-90's, Outside's feature article content was pretty decent. But I
noted a marked switch to glitzy "Men's Health" type trash, and
pie-in-the-sky adventure treks that virtually no one (that I know) would
ever do. I don't need to hear about whitewater rafting in Tibet, or
surfing in New Zealand. Adventure tourism for beautiful (and rich)
people with lots of available time. I stike out on all three of those
criteria.

Anyway, we have thought about looking for a replacement maagazine, but
for years now inertia has triumphed. "Backpacking" Magazine is an
obvious choice, but we haven't made the leap. Believe it or not, the
AAA travel magazine isn't bad, and I have seen an issue or two of a
National Geographic sponsored travel magazine that also looks
intriguing. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Oddly enough, Outside Magazine continues to send me a packet of
subscription renewal forms, once a month like clockwork. I have told
them to cease, many times, and told them why. The packets continue, for
years now. I suppose this is symptomatic of the dysfunctional arrogance
at this magazine.

I have not read the latest Outside idiocy, nor will I.
