Greetings,
I would like to offer a comment on what I have also noticed about
staffing at a couple of Scout camps and your comment about Philmont
staffing recently.
Staffing, even at a Scout camp where the boys are working for the love
of the job and not the money, is still subject to the laws of supply and
demand. If Philmont and the other camps that I have observed are not
getting a large enough number of applications, they need to take a hard
look at what they are offering both in terms of money and the job. If
the money or the job is not up to the level the applicant expects, they
will go somewhere else.
This does not mean that we have to provide air conditioned tents or a
large pay, but it does mean that we most likely need to increase the pay
and structure the job and performance expectations such that well
qualified people will want to apply.
Going the "cheap" route leads to a downward spiral in both quality of
applicants and actual performance. Most well qualified people want to
work in an environment where being slack is not tolerated. If Philmont
or any other Scout camp does not have enough people to fill the
positions, then being slack is tolerated because they have no one else
to do the job.
Getting off my soapbox and back to work before I am considered slack. :)
