[Philmont] Slow and Fast hikers

Slow hiker AT THAT POINT IN TIME is always in front. If the slowest hiker is not already in front, a gap will open in the line of hikers - the one at the back of the gap is now the slowest and moves to the front.

Who is slowest will vary by time of day, uphill or downhill, or other things like blisters.

Only exception I've made is when the slowest person has a terrible sense of pace and slowed down even more because there was no one in front pulling him along. In that case, we put a hiker with a good sense of pace in front of him who then set a comfortable pace for the second hiker.

Keeping the crew together IS a health and safety issue, as others have noted, and also a team atitude - they are all doing something together. The entire crew will arrive sooner when the slowest hiker sets the pace.
