Good discussion. So what happens when you have a crew of 10 and 8 are
fine moving at 2 miles an hour and the other 2 only move at 1.5 mile an
hour?
Do you punish the majority of the crew and force them to wait for the
slower ones or do you throw the slower guys off the crew before you get
to the trail in the first place.

In our 2006 crew we had a fairly broad mix relative to speed. We had
several that were jackrabbits regardless of how much they were carrying. And
we had one or two who were slower than the rest. On our hike to our
starting camp, after the second time I requested that the jackrabbits not
get so far out in front (and in their defense, they stopped when they
realized they were out of contact) and slow down for the slower hikers they
came up with the suggestion that the slower hiker set the pace.
The slower hiker led for most of the trek, except when we caterpillared, or
when we were trekking with a burro. We weren't the fastest crew at the
ranch, but I think we passed more crews than passed us. We averaged
somewhere between two and 2 1/2 miles per hour depending on the terrain and
distractions.
The jackrabbits actually said they really liked the slower pace because they
got to talk with the rest of the crew and felt like the group was more
cohesive.
