With all due respect, that was their job/assignment. That way if they died
or didn't make it back to Virginia, their journals would tell people what
they saw, encountered, experienced, etc.
The abridged versions are an excellent read; the full journals are very
meticulous and full of scientific details that would bore most folks to
death. Too bad they got misplaced along the way, by Lewis and/or Clark, and
didn't get published until a number of years after the expedition. By then
most of the details had been reported by other 'adventurers'.
Happy Trail,
Roy Fisher

Subject: [Philmont] Cameras and notepads. A differing opinion.
On keeping a journal: Lewis and Clark are famous for their expedition
but the journals they kept are lesser known.
It would be worth sharing their journals with Scouts about to head off
to Philmont, to give them a tremendous example of a journal kept for
President Thomas Jefferson.
Their journals are probably in most major public libraries and also in
bookstores such as Barnes & Nobles.
