[Philmont] Selecting a Crew Leader

1. On our council contingents we did not elect the crew leader till much
closer to the trek after everyone had some time with each other on training
hikes and prep meetings. We would let one scout lead each meeting or event
as needed.

2. I don't see reading as a fatal flaw in being a crew leader. We elected an
assistant crew leader, (even though there is no such recognized position)
this year for other reasons and I suspect that he would be allowed to sit in
logistics with the crew leader if his reading were needed. I don't recall
that being necessary though. Marking the map with the correct symbols etc
and requesting program and the like is mostly what goes on in logistics. He
may need some help with the water board but others can do that as well. I
think Philmont would surely accommodate such a crew leader.

Subject: [Philmont] Selecting a Crew Leader

All,

We will be having our Crew Leader selection meeting very
soon. Beforehand I have 2 questions for the group to help
me with...

1) Our contingent is made is made up of scouts mostly from
our troop, but we have a few scouts from different troops
in the area, so we have the issue where not everyone knows
each other. It is important to me that everyone have a fair
shot at being elected the Crew Leader if he so desires. So,
what are the steps a Council Contingent uses to choose a
crew leader?

2) We have a reading impaired scout who is nearly a Life
Scout, a good leader, and IMHO would make an excellent Crew
Leader. Question: Does his reading impairment issue prevent
him from being a candidate for Crew Leader? Once at
Philmont, how critical are good/excellent reading skills
for the Crew Leader? If they are, where would that be,
besides in Logistics? Can the adult advisor assist
(ARGH!!)?
